The original stamp visible on the back of this rare portrait reveals that the image is an early photograph from the Lutterodt studio and that it was probably taken about 1880. The sophisticated backdrop combined with the complex mise-en-scène, with each of the four male attendants wearing different cloths and displaying choreographed hand gestures, point to the importance of the central figure.
