Triptych with the Passion of Christ

South German

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 14

This private devotional triptych presents a sequence of Passion scenes that begins with the plaque second from the top on the left wing and reads clockwise, with the final scene, the Crucifixion, at the center. The only other recorded example (now lost) is illustrated in Albrecht of Brandenburg's personal inventory of his treasury in Halle. The cardinal's version contained one thousand particles of unnamed saints.
