Saw clock
Not on view
The cylindrical clock is driven by its own weight, hanging on a toothed strip of brass. Saw clocks do not need to be wound; when they run down, they need only to be flipped around—there is a dial on each side—and hung by the bottom (now top) ring, and they begin to keep time again. This case features a gold monogram "lc" (Landgrave Charles) above a Latin inscription that relates to a wise ruler employing exceptional artisans: "It is through technique that the effort of the task is overcome."
