Virgin and Child with an Apple

Martin Schongauer German

Not on view

The great fifteenth-century engraver Schongauer pared down the traditional image of the Virgin and child to the basic elements. Sculpture-like and lacking background, the Virgin stands on a mound as she enfolds her child in her arms. The Christ child grasps an apple, an allusion to the Fall of Man and his role as Redeemer.
