Watch Pin

Riker Brothers American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 706

The Riker Brothers brooch was made in two parts riveted together. The front plate depicts a heron standing among diamond- and pearl-studded cattails and lily pads; the back features a sunset in brilliantly colored plique-à-jour enameling. In this challenging technique, backless cells of color allow light to shine through, similar to a stained glass window. The bracelet, also by Riker, features a Chinese-inspired pattern and an outstretched dragon atop four central fretwork links that are arched to hug the wearer’s wrist.
