『ハーパーズ・ウィークリー誌』の特派員画家だったホーマーは、アメリカ南北戦争中に2回北軍の前線を訪れました。戦後描かれたこの作品は、1864年5月のスポットシルバニア(バージニア州)の戦いでフランシス・チャニング・バーロウ准将が南軍の兵士と将校を捕虜にした場面を描いています。両軍の典型的な人物像を対照的なポーズで描き、人物間に距離を置くことによっ て、両軍の間の観念的な断絶を象徴的に表しています。この作品は、ニューヨークの米国美術アカデミーでホーマーの名声を確立し、1867年のパリ万国博覧会に展示されて批評家の賞賛を浴びました。
