皇太后のペンダント・マスク

アフリカ美術を象徴するこのペンダントは、ベニン王国の国王が儀式で胸飾りとして着用したものです。エシギエ王は16 世紀ベニン王国の優れた指導者のひとりでしたが、このペンダントは、そのイヨバ(皇太后)であり国王の顧問でもあったイディアを記念して作らせた作品のひとつで、圧倒的な表現力を誇っています。はっきりとした顔立ちが、凝った襟と頭髪の洗練された透かし細工で縁取られています。襟と頭の小像はふたつの権力を象徴するもので、一方は王国に莫大な富をもたらしたポルトガルの商人、もう一方はベニン王権の半神性の象徴である両生魚を表しています。
