グデア座像

シュメール民族の都市国家ラガシュの支配者グデアを表したこの座像は、同じくその支 配下にあった古代都市ギルスで出土したと考えられています。衣服には、縦に並ぶくさび形文字で「王朝の父、グデアの命長かれ」と刻まれています。神殿に祭られたと思われる座像に刻まれた碑文は、支配者の長寿をラガシュの神々に直に懇願するものものでした。真剣な表情と重ね合わされた手が、座像が果たすべき役割にふさわしい敬けんさと穏やかさを表しています。
