衣装を着た人物のこの見事な習作は、中国に住んだフランドル人イエズス会宣教師、ニコラ・トリゴーの感動的な肖像画でもあります。アントワープのイエズス会派の大学と深い関りのあったルーベンスは、トリゴーが宣教師採用のための資金集めで同市を訪れた際にこの絵を描きま した。作品に描かれている衣装は、朝鮮の帽子と中国の官吏・学者の式服を組み合わせたもので、中国文化との同化を望む一方、この文化を認めながらもある程度の距離を保ちたいとするイエズス会の姿勢を表しています。ルーベンスは、衣の仕立て、手触り、そして重みを美しく表現すると同時に、ラテン語でその色彩を記しました。
