パリの馬の市は左手の背景に見えるサルペトリエール病院近くのロピタル通りで開かれました。ボヌールは人目に付かないように男装し、1年半の間、週に2回市へ出かけてはスケッチをしました。ボヌールはこの作品を1852 年に描き始め、1853年のサロンに出展した後に修正を加えました。この印象的で活気あふれる作品は、1887年にメトロポリタン美術館に収蔵されて以来、当館のコレクションのなかで最も人気がある愛すべき作品となっています。
