世紀末の派手で陳腐なモンマルトルの歓楽街を繰り返し描写したロートレックは、1892年から1896年の間に娼婦の生活を記録する一連の作品を手がけました。ドガによる娼家の情景を描いたモノタイプ版画や日本の官能的な春画の中に、ロートレックは同様に率直であけすけな力強さを感じ、これを大型の画面に素晴らしく奔放に描く自由を見出したようです。ロートレックは「まったく気取ることなく気ままに寝椅子に横たわる」娼婦の自然体を尊重しました。この作品は1890年代中頃に描かれたもので、同性愛者の親密な関係に焦点をおいた4部作のなかの1枚です。
