세기말 몽마르트의 화려하고 저속한 밤 문화를 고집스럽게 기록한 로트레크는 1892년에서 1896년 사이에 완성된 연작 그림에서 매춘부들의 삶을 기록하는 일에 착수하였습니다. 그는 홍등가 풍경을 담은 드가의 모노타이프와 에로틱한 일본의 판화에서 생생한 열정의 이미지를 창조할 예술적 자유를 발견한 것으로 보입니다. 다만 그는 좀 더 큰 그림으로 놀라울 만큼 거리낌 없는 작품을 주저 없이 제작해냈습니다. 로트레크는 매춘부들의 자연스러움을 높이 평가하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “어떠한 가식도 없이… 긴 소파에서 몸을 쭉 뻗고 있는 여인들….” 소파는 1890년대 중반에 그려진 레즈비언 커플이 주고받은 은밀한 행위에 초점을 맞춘 다른 세 점의 그림들과도 관련이 있습니다.
