元は長方形の箱の一面だった1本の象牙から彫られたこのパネルは、10–11世紀にウマイヤ朝のカリフ(711–1031年)の支配下にあったスペインで作られた象牙作品のひとつです。首都のコルドバ、または王宮のあったマディナ・アルザフラで主に王室のために作られました。ウマイヤ朝は父祖がシリアの王族だったため、これらの象牙製品に見られる文様がシリアを起源とすることは当然のことでしょう。このパネルに見られるアラビア唐草模様は古代末期に広く親しまれた蔓とアカンサスの葉の渦巻き模様を様式化したものです。
