アリストテレスとフィリスの広口水差し
広口水差しとは、宗教儀式または一般的な手洗いに使われる水差しです。司祭によるミサの前の儀式で、あるいは家庭で食事の前に使われました。この作品はおそらく食事に招いた客を楽しませるために作られたと考えられます。ギリシャの哲学者でアレクサンダー大王を教え子としたアリストテレスが、魅惑的なフィリスからの屈辱を甘んじて受ける姿を、教訓として若い君主アレクサンダーに示したという有名な道徳的伝説を表しています。 カマルドリ派修道院の修道僧でしたが、修道 院外で工房を営むことを許可され、成功を収 めました。彼の最も有名な作品のひとつであ るこの板絵に見られる非常に繊細で深みのあ る調和の取れた色彩は、彼の写本彩飾画家と しての技能を反映しています。この四つ葉型 パネルは元々祭壇画下部の裾絵(プレデッラ) の一部でした。パネルの不規則な形を巧みに 利用し、勾配のある小屋の屋根など、構図上の 要素が描かれています。
