この見事な《最後の晩餐》は、キリストの受難を表した4連作のタペストリーの1枚です。16世紀のブリュッセルの代表的画家、ベルナール・ヴァン・オルレイのデザインによるこの作品は、彼が北方の伝統と、イタリア美術の原型を融合し、新たなタペストリーの様式を開拓した好例です。作品では、構図のヒントとなったアルブレヒト・デューラーの版画《最後の晩餐》に見られる豊かな感情表現と詳細な描写を、ラファエロ作品の風格ある人物や空間構成と組み合わせています。ラファエロによる《使徒言行録》と題されたシスティーヌ礼拝堂のための一連のタペストリーの下絵は、紡織のためブリュッセルへ送られましたが、これがヴァン・オルレイにとって重要な手本となりました。
