この作品は、バルテュスが青年期の夏を過ごしたスイスのベルナーオーバーラント地方の山頂の光景を基に、架空の高原を描いたものです。バルテュスはこの作品でさまざまな人物について言及しています。曖昧に描かれた彼自身の人生における実在の人物だけでなく、ニコラ・プッサンとギュスターヴ・クールベなど、彼が尊敬した画家の作品から取ったとはっきり分かる人物も描かれています。明暗がはっきり分かれているこの構図の焦点は、腕を頭上に伸ばしている金髪の大柄な女性です。バルテュスは、多難な交際期間を経て、《山》を完成した年にこの人物のモデルとなった女性と結婚しました。この作品は《夏~四季4連作の1作目》と副題をつけて1939年にニューヨークのピエール・マティス・ギャラリーに展示されましたが、残りの3つの季節が描かれることはありませんでした。
