ロシア生まれのカンディンスキーは、1896年 にミュンヘンで画家としての活動を開始し、1911年までには、精神的、形而上学的、神知学的アイデアに着想を得た独創的な芸術表現を確立していました。彼の抽象画は、鮮やかな色彩や具体的な造形から切り離された線描の要素などにより、鑑賞者の情緒的反応を促すことを目指していました。この作品は《インプロヴィゼーション》と題した36点の連作の1点で、その多くは聖書を抽象的イメージの源としています。エデンの園の物語を主題としたこの作品では、大きな黄色い太陽を中心とする牧歌的な光景が描かれていますが、散在する黒い造形がアダムとイブの楽園追放と、迫り来る第一次世界大戦の惨禍を予言しているかのようです。
