1890年代初頭にニューヨーク州コロナでガラス工房を営んだルイス・カムフォート・ティファニーは、熟練した職人の協力のもと、ファヴリルと名付けた革新的な吹きガラスの技法を生み出しました。ティファニーの花瓶や飾り板の造形、色彩、仕上げの多くは、古代ガラスや自然から発想を得たものでした。この独特の花瓶は、ティファニーのトレードマークである虹色の輝きを特徴としており、孔雀の羽に見られる油性の光沢を巧みに捉えています。また、扇の形が孔雀が羽を広げた様子を思い起こさせます。この作品は、1896年にティファニーの熱心な後援者だったルイジーンとヘンリー・オズボーン・ヘーヴマイヤーより当館に寄贈された多数の作品のひとつです。それはティファニーが装飾的な吹きガラスの器を制作し始めてわずか3 年後のことでした。
