A diplomat and politician, the sitter was younger brother to Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, and uncle to Horace Walpole the collector, writer and art historian. He wears a wig, velvet coat and a shirt with ruffled cuffs. Shown three-quarters length, he sits at a desk with inkstand and papers, his left elbow propped on the desk, and his right hand holding a pen.
