The City Carriers
This British satire, made before the American Revolution, represents the Lord Mayor London, Samuel Turner leading a procession. He walks next to Liberty who holds an emblematic cap on a pole. They are followed by Truth (a naked woman crowned with the sun and holding a palm) who rides a blinkered donkey loaded with grievances and apprehensions. Others present include William Beckford, Barlow Trecothick, and Sir Robert Ladbroke; with a crowd at the rear holding an effigy of Thomas Harley. The procession heads towards the Gate of Red-dress, next to which Henry Fox, Lord Holland, portrayed as a fox, points to a fool's cap on the ground.
