Fragments of a Hanging with a Lotus-Motif Band

Not on view

These fragments are elements of curtains or hangings. They would have formed the shafts of columns separating figures or floral and arboreal motifs. Depictions of large textile furnishings in mosaics and other works of art, as well as the significant number of colorful fragments in a variety of patterns, attest to the widespread use of such furnishings in official buildings, churches, and domestic settings. Large textile sets such as these were produced in specialized workshops.
