Tile Depicting Bahram Gur and Azada
Illustrating a scene from the Persian national epic, the Shahnama, this tile depicts the hero Bahram Gur hunting with his favorite harp-playing companion, Azada - both atop a striding camel. Similar tiles bearing figures drawn from popular Persian literature are known to have decorated the Ilkhanid summer palace known as Takht-e Sulaiman, likely built in the late 13th century for the ruler Abaqa (1265-1282).
