This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
Offering tables, often placed in front of the statue niche of a tomb, served as altars for the ritual implements and food offerings presented to the dead. This example, with a projecting spout used to drain liquid offerings, represents the classic Middle Kingdom type. The central picture of a woven mat laden with food and drink faces the tomb and the deceased within, while the offering formulas face the visitor so that he or she can recite them.
