Stela of the Soldier Khusobek
Middle Kingdom
Not on view
This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
A dramatic Middle Kingdom biographical inscription, this stela describes Khusobek’s participation in a military campaign of Senwosret III in Retjenu, an area now in Lebanon and Syria. The king himself drew up the battle plan, combat ensued at a place called Sekmem, and the Egyptians subsequently triumphed. In recognition of his service, Khusobek received an electrum staff and dagger from the king himself. Khusobek further relates that he also battled against Nubians.
