This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
Statues with large groupings of extended families became increasingly common as the Middle Kingdom progressed. Senpu is the central, cloaked figure in this group surrounded by his mother, brothers, and perhaps a grandmother. In front is a miniature offering table decorated with depictions of bread and vessels on a mat. The monument was placed in Senpu’s chapel at Abydos, ensuring that he and his family would participate in the city’s sacred Osiris procession for eternity.
