The Château de Nègrepelisse
Jean Honoré Fragonard French
Not on view
In October 1773, Bergeret and Fragonard spent fourteen days at Bergeret’s château in Nègrepelisse, in the south of France. During this hiatus in their journey to Italy, Fragonard explored and sketched his patron’s property—including the thirteenth-century château, with its central court surrounded by walls. This sheet provides an intimate view of life just outside the fortified estate, which was then buttressed by several sheds and a mill wheel. In the foreground, figures gather alongside the shore of the Aveyron River to fish or bask in the sun.
