Tatyana Grosman founded Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in West Islip, New York in 1957. She was interested in publishing special editions of poetry illustrated by painters. The first artist she called with Rivers, who opted to work with O'Hara. Their collaboration, 'Stones', would be the first project published by ULAE.
Grosman had a special denim paper made by Douglass Howell for the inner folder to celebrate Rivers and O'Hara, who always worked in blue jeans. The paper was designed by hand using linen cuttings and blue denim.
