Mise-en-carte for Woven Brocade with Floral Pattern and a Bouquet
Spanish School, 18th Century Spanish
Not on view
Mise-en-carte (weaving pattern) for woven brocade, with a design motif typical of the the second half of the 18th century, when textile designs were often decorated with colorful garlands of flowers and leaves, as well as other naturalistic motifs and garden trophies.
This design contains a floral pattern with yellow and orange acanthus leaves and stylized flowers, and a bouquet placed towards the upper-right corner of the design, similar to one shown in a detail of mise-en-carte related to this design (38.98.25). The bouquet is made up of a large stylized flower with pink petals and yellow pistils that stands on a green stem, a stylized exotic flower, possibly a type of orchid or lily, with purple petals, smaller stylized flowers with yellow and purple petals and small, round flower buds colored with yellow, pink or purple, surrounded by green branches with leaves. The design contains instructions written in ink in Spanish, suggesting the materials with which the different parts of the design would be made. There is also a smaller bouquet towards the lower-right corner of the design, with thin branches with leaves and small flowers and flower buds with turquoise petals. This brouquet, however, is scratched with ink, suggesting it would have been taken out of the final textile. The mise-en-carte has a grid marked with graphite.
