Design for Embroidered Border with a Rose Vine

Anonymous, French, 18th century French

Not on view

Drawing with a design for an embroidered border featuring a naturalistic floral motif typical of the late 18th century and the style of the court of Louis XVI. The design is made up of a vertical stripe that runs along the upper side of the sheet, flanked to the bottom by vertical ovals, organized in pairs separated with small sprigs of three, executed with white and pink. Below them is a horizontal rose vine with thin green branches and small leaves colored with shades of blue and green, and white roses with pink shadows. Two bundles of branches scroll out of the rose vine towards the bottom of the sheet of paper: on the left, one with stylized leaves colored with green and pink, and a few flower buds colored with white and pink; to the right, one with stylized flowers made up of elongated teardrop shapes that end in tiny rosettes of either blue or white petals. This rose vine is executed on a dark blue background.
