Plate No. 6, "Poppies & Corn: Evening Dress" of The Lady's Crewel Embroidery Book, Second Series, by E. M. C. [Elvira Mary Courbould]
Sixth plate of The Lady's Crewel Embroidery Book, Second Series by E. M. C. [Elvira Mary Courbold], published by Hatchard, in Picadilly, London, and possibly dated 1879. This type of books would be purchased for women to engage in needlework activities and embroidery at the home, decorating a variety of textiles for interiors or to be used in the making of dresses for the members of the household. This plate, titled "Poppies & Corn: Evening Dress" contains a variety of poppy motifs, showing thin bundles with a fully blossomed poppy from different angles, with different types of stylized leaves and with a flower bud that scrolls around the stem of the poppy in different ways, and a horizontal long stem with leaves and a poppy to its right end, with some poppy buds and corn ears, in the bottom of the page. These motifs were meant to be embroidered into evening dresses.
