Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. This cityscape view shows the old town of Stockholm (Sweden) from the southern district of Sodermalm (across the harbor, at bottom). A railway line bridge crosses the boat-filled waterway from the lower center of Sodermalm to the opposite shore filled with buildings. Prominent at right is a tall steeple (Riddarholms Kyrkan) and the City Hall (Stadshus); one steeple (Tyska Kyrkan) stands above rooftops at left. Bone drew this scene on site, so the print is reversed from the actual view. This print ranks among the artist's most impressive prints.
