Abundance (Abondantia), no. 2 in a set of 4 allegorical figures

Etienne Delaune French

Not on view

Engraving with an allegorical figure of Abundance, the second in a set of four, representing peace, abundance, war, and famine. Representing the abundance that proceeds from peace, this print consists of a sitting woman, holding a bowl on her right hand, and a cornucopia with bundles of fruits (her most common attribute) on her left hand. On the ground are bundles of wheat ears, a basket filled with bunches of grapes, and a basket with fruits, all of them symbolizing the abundance of harvests in times of peace. Regardless of the abundance, the print also presents a warning, including a dog, symbol of vigilance, and a fallen ewer with its contents running out, symbol of Temperance. Virtuosity is symbolized by the palm tree in the background, on the left. Also in the background, on the right, is a man driving a carriage with hay.
