The End of the Great War (La Fin de la Grande Guerre), in Le Mot no 13, March 6, 1915
Optimistically declaring the end of the war, this print and poem present symbols of French victory, including the Gallic rooster defeating a menacing German eagle. Dufy contrasts French soldiers on a spiritual mission with a barbarous German army, shown executing priests and civilians and burning cathedrals. Images of Joan of Arc and General Joseph Joffre, a contemporary war hero, also represent French fortitude.
