Plans for the Garden of Freifrau F. von Froelich in Augsburg, Germany

Franz Xavier Heissinger German

Not on view

This drawing represents a full plan for the English-style gardens on the estate of a Freifrau F. von Froelich, possibly to be identified with Freifrau Ida Friederike von Froelich. It was made by Franz Xavier Heissinger, who was a celebrated garden designer, and sometimes architect, from Munich. He became much sought after predominantly in Switzerland in the earlier part of his career, before he moved to the United States in or around 1870. This move may have been inspired by his previous work for his American clientele on several estates in Switzerland and Germany. The design for Freifrau Froelich dates from his European period, although this drawing appears to have been made later in New York City and may have been intended for publication. The design contains two buildings opposite one another on the vertical axis, while the main house is depicted on the right side, with adjacent parterres in the French style. The garden contains a large lake and meandering paths laid out in a figure eight plan across the estate.
