After serving in the U.S. Army in France and Germany in the 1950s, Kitaj moved to England to study art under the G.I. Bill. As a student at the Royal College of Art, Kitaj was recognized for his accomplished draftsmanship, a skill also evidenced in his prints. In 1966 he embarked on a portfolio of prints depicting contemporary poets mainly from Black Mountain College, an experimental college in North Carolina. The subject of the first print is Robert Creeley, a friend and later collaborator of the artist’s. Kitaj had Creeley sit for a portrait sketch in pastel, which was photographed, transferred to a screen, and printed.
