Arrivée Devant Portsmouth (Arrival Off Portsmouth)
Not on view
In October 1844, Louis Philippe, King of the French, crossed the Channel to make a week-long visit to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Windsor Castle. This naval scene shows the king arriving off the English coast near Portsmouth on October 8th, his ship "Le Gomer" accompanied by supporting vessels. The print comes from a bound set of twenty-five lithographs published in 1846 to commemorate the journey. Related text, pp. 7-8 describes the subject.
