The Dutch periodical Wendingen was dedicated to architecture and related arts, and closely affiliated with the architectural society Amicitia et Architectura. It first appeared in 1918 and publication continued through 1931, with several interruptions. Each issue had a unique cover design by contemporary (graphic) artists, and was dedicated to a specific theme.

This double issue, numbers 9 and 10 of year 2 (1919) is dedicated to theater and contains, among others, an article on communism and the theater, a manifesto in defense of a theater for the people to be build in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam by architect Hendrick Wijdeveld, discussions of the development and place of Dutch theater in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century with numerous illustrations of set designs, and a report on contemporary theater in the United States of America. The front and back cover illustrations for this issue were done by Jan Toorop.
