In 1932 Picasso wrote a note to himself on the back of an envelope regarding his reaction to seeing Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe: "I tell myself, tribulations for later." This was a particularly prescient quote. Close to thirty years later, Picasso would confront the great painting in a series of one hundred and forty drawings, twenty-seven paintings, and four linoleum cuts, including this impression, the only one executed in color.
