Statue of the Mayor Rehuankh Seated

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

Middle Kingdom statues made of quartzite seem to have been largely restricted to the king and the upper levels of society and are notable for their subtle, sensitive faces. Rehuankh is dressed in an enveloping cloak, a garment made from a large sheet of cloth wound twice around the body. The diagonal opening of the garment creates the impression that Rehuankh is pulling his cloak tightly around him while enacting a gesture of reverence with his flattened hand.
