In 1880, Schastey partnered with architect-designer August Fiedler to help complete the interiors of the Samuel Nickerson House in Chicago. Fiedler, a German immigrant who trained in Europe, first joined the leading cabinet and decorating houses in New York City before venturing to the Midwest to establish his own firm. While this chair, one of four, shares several elements found in other Schastey designs, it is most unusual for its inventive interpretations of Renaissance winged sphinxes.
