A Young Woman Seated on a Chair

Jean Honoré Fragonard French

Not on view

This sheet has long been considered a bittersweet portrayal of the artist’s daughter, Rosalie, during a period of illness before her death in 1788 at the age of eighteen. The young woman clutches a pillow, and a fire screen alongside her chair protects her from drafts. The lack of specificity in her features, however, and the sheet’s similarities to other drawings of this type dated to the early 1770s make the sitter’s identity difficult to confirm.
