In this print, one of only two Annibale executed in pure etching, the artist returns to a subject he had treated in painting in 1596 in the Mocking of Christ, now at the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna. In the print the composition is expanded and made more dramatic. The was very popular in the seventeenth century, going through five states and reproduced in at least 13 printed copies. The preparatory drawing for the print, incised for transfer on the plate, is at Chatsworth (inv. no. 430; 164 x 132 mm)
