Following his return from Italy, Degas continued to etch small portraits that integrate influences from artists he studied. This sensitive and frank depiction of his younger sister displays his increasing sophistication with the etching technique, striking a tonal balance between the delicacy of her face and the richness of the background and the fur muff. Although Degas also painted two portraits of his sister around this time, the etching is neither preparatory to nor a repetition of either painting, but rather stands as an independent work.
