Carved stone book

On View Gallery Watson Library

Hand-carved catlinite books with Native American motifs are common. Catlinite, also called pipestone, is an easily carved clay stone used by Native Americans for making pipes, beads, and other items. Found in mines in the central part of the United States, the stone ranges in color from pink to brick red. This souvenir book is incised with floral and fan motifs, the word Book, an image of a warrior, and weapons.
