ミズーリ州で育ったビンガムは、カナダとの国境近くに始まりセントルイスでミシシッピ川に合流する偉大なミズーリ川沿岸の生活を経験からよく知っていました。この作品には、動物の生皮を売るため北部の荒野から丸木舟で川を下ってきた年老いたフランス人の毛皮商人と、フラットライフルを手に休息をとる息子(インディアンとヨーロッパ系アメリカ人の混血)が描かれています。奥深い魔法の世界のような霞と静寂が、その光景を包み込んでいます。ビンガムがこの絵を描いた19世紀中頃までには、このような交易手段は長く廃れていましたが、ニューヨークで展示されたこの作品はアメリカ東部の人々の想像力をかき立てました。
