北アメリカ東海岸の風景を詳細に描いて早くから名声を築いたチャーチは、ドイツの博物学者アレクサンダー・フォン・フンボルトに啓発され、1853年と1857年に南米へ遠征旅行しました。《アンデスの山奥》は、チャーチがエクアドルで描いた何十枚もの鉛筆と油彩のスケッチを基に統合した作品であり、フンボルトがアンデスの赤道付近で観察した熱帯から温暖、極寒におよぶ気候の変動を描いています。チャーチは当初この作品を窓に似た巨大な額縁に入れて展示し、目白押しに訪れた観客に、驚くほど詳細に描かれた植物と大きく広がる風景が見えるようオペラグラスで鑑賞することを勧めました。
