ミフラーブ

モスクにおける最も重要な要素は、信者が祈りの時にメッカの方向を向くよう配置されたミフラーブです。メッカはアラビア半島にあるイスラム教の聖なる巡礼地です。イスファハンのマドラサ・イマミ・モスクにあったこのミフラーブは、小さな施釉タイルをモザイク状に組み合わせてさまざまな模様や銘を表しています。外側の枠には、イスラム教の聖典であるコーランからの引用が右下から左下に記されています。クーフィー体で書かれた預言者モハメッドの格言が先のとがったアーチを取り囲み、筆記体による3つ目の銘が窪みの中心枠に入っています。このミフラーブはモザイクタイルの作品として現存する最古の名品と言えます。
