15세기 후반 카리브해 지역의 섬을 스페인인들이 점령하기 수 세기 전, 대 안틸 제도에 거주하던 타이노족은 종교의식에 쓰이는 뛰어난 예술 작품을 제작하였습니다. 다양한 크기와 재료로—나무, 점토, 돌, 조개껍데기, 뼈—제작된 작품들은 보통 눈과 입을 강조하였으며 시선을 사로잡는 강력한 이미지를 보여줍니다. 쭈그리고 앉아 있는 수척한 남성을 그린 이 뛰어난 작품은 제미(영웅), 제미스라고 불리는 타이노 문화에서 가장 중요하게 숭배하는 대상입니다. 이 작품은 당시 코호바를 들이 마시던 의식에 사용되었습니다.
