한스 멤링은 1465년부터 그가 사망한 1494년까지 브뤼주에서 선도적인 화가였습니다. 이러한 초상화들은 1465년부터 1478년까지 메디치 은행지점을 관리했던 브뤼주에 있는 대형 이탈리아 상인 사회의 일원인 톰마소와 마리아 포르티나리를 묘사하고 있습니다. 북부 르네상스 미술의 걸작 가운데 하나인 이 초상화들은 아마 마리아가 약 14세였고 톰마소가 42세였을 1470년에 이 커플의 결혼 때 의뢰된 것일 수 있습니다. 이 그림들은 원래 성모와 아기예수의 기념상 옆에서 이동식 3연작을 형성했습니다.
