하트셉수트 스핑크스

이 위엄 있는 스핑크스는 하트셉수트와그녀의 의붓아들이었던 투트모세 3세 공동통치기 중 제작되었습니다. 이 여성 파라오가기원전 1458년에 사망한 후 투트모세 3세는 데르 엘 바리 신전에 있던 하트셉수트의 다른 조각품들과 함께 이 작품을 파괴하여 채석장에 버리도록 명령하였습니다. 1920년대에 메트로폴리탄 박물관의 발굴단은 이 조각난 작품을 발굴하여 복원하였습니다. 당시 발굴된 여섯 개의 화강암 스핑크스 중 네 개는 크기가 다른 것으로 보아 신전 경내에 단독으로 세워졌던 것 같습니다. 무게가 6,758kg에 달하는 이야수는 출입구 양옆에 서 있었을 것으로 추정되는 한 쌍의 스핑크스 중 하나입니다. 이 스핑크스와 함께 발굴되었던 다른스핑크스 유물은 카이로에 있습니다.
